About the Speaker
Dr Lyu Zhijun has long worked on big data and artificial intelligence, with both research and development and frontline business experience in big data intelligence analysis, financial regulatory technology and anti-money laundering. He has served as the director of a large state-owned research institute and as the legal representative and co-founder of a technology start-up, and has twice received the National Science and Technology Progress Award and more than ten provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards. He is currently a researcher at the Anti-Money Laundering Centre of Nanjing Audit University and a special consultant to several financial institutions, concurrently serves as an adjunct professor and graduate supervisor at Nanjing University, Southeast University and Nanjing Police University, and has been named an Advanced Individual in Jiangsu's Digital Transformation, a Pioneer in Fintech Leadership, and a Chief Technology Officer among Jiangsu's outstanding software enterprise talents.
The Lecture
Dr Lyu began by analysing changes in the anti-money laundering (AML) regulatory environment. He noted that the focus of the FATF's fifth round of mutual evaluations has shifted from institution-building to the effectiveness of measures, and that the newly revised Anti-Money Laundering Law requires compliance to be embedded in customer due diligence, beneficial ownership penetration, transaction monitoring and the referral of leads. Poor-quality suspicious transaction reports, under-reporting, flawed monitoring models and delays remain common. He summed up the current features of money laundering as concealment, fragmentation, cross-border operation, organisation, shell companies and technological countermeasures, and observed that traditional fixed-rule monitoring is facing challenges: financial institutions still need to improve in deep correlation analysis, integration of external data, identification of hidden networks and beneficial ownership penetration.Drawing on police practice, he walked through case acceptance and filing, investigation and evidence collection, analysis and assessment, arrest and interrogation, and referral for prosecution. He highlighted an analytical approach that takes the flow of funds as the main line, information flows as support and person-case links as the objective, and explained how systems and tools are used to integrate multi-source data, identify anomalous transactions and analyse relationship networks. In the Q&A session, he responded to questions from faculty and students.

By connecting entrepreneurs' practical experience with AML teaching, the event helped students understand how financial regulatory technology is applied in practice and how AML operations actually work. It is a concrete step by the Institute to bring high-quality industry resources into the classroom and advance university-enterprise collaborative education.
